Ohio Nursery & Landscape Association Celebrates Excellence in the Landscape Profession

January 7, 2015 –Columbus, OH – Integrity Sustainable Planning and Design is proud to announce it has achieved award-winning status from The Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association (ONLA) in its prestigious 42nd annual Landscape Awards Program.

Integrity Sustainable Planning and Design was presented with a coveted Merit Award in the Theme Gardens, Show Gardens or Educational or Informative Display of Horticultural Products, Services, or Techniques for the “OUR Water (Olentangy Urban Rainscapes)” Project.

The OUR Water pilot project is installed at five residential properties on Hamlet Street in Weinland Park, an older Columbus brownfield neighborhood currently being serviced by a combined sanitary and storm water sewer system.  The project has been carefully crafted to educate the public about practical approaches to reduce their watershed footprint, build community branding, and manage urban stormwater in a more sustainable way.  Front yard and curbside rain gardens accept roof rainwater directed into appropriately sized, slightly depressed planted bed areas filled with a permeable gravel/soil mix.  These rain gardens reduce the flow of site water into storm drains and minimize subsequent erosion, water pollution, and flooding. A selection of native and adaptive plants has been utilized for their tolerance of a seasonally wet environment, absorption of water and for their ability to attract local wildlife such as native birds. These showy grasses, shrubs and flowering perennials offer a beautiful street-side view and provide increased water infiltration capacity. Homeowners helped to select from a palette of styles and colors with a professional landscape design team to add a custom touch to their front yard rain garden.

The Landscape Awards Program encourages landscape contractors and landscape architects to continue their efforts to raise the industry’s image through consistent use of quality materials and skilled craftsmanship.

The ONLA’s Landscape Awards Program also makes citizens aware of how quality landscaping can improve our environment and property values, recognizes citizens who have taken action through quality landscaping, and rewards skilled professionals who have executed quality workmanship. The program is open to both members and non-members of the ONLA. A jury of distinguished professionals in the fields of landscape architecture, education and horticulture evaluated entries and recommended recipients to the ONLA Landscape Awards Committee.

Integrity Sustainable Planning and Design, one of only 15 winning companies in Ohio, was recognized during a ceremony hosted by the ONLA on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
